With Punching the Clown, Lambchop returns with its seventeenth studio album and its first full-length release since 2022's The Bible.

Punching the Clown finds bandleader Kurt Wagner pursuing one of the most distinctive concepts of his career. The inspiration for the album came from a fleeting musical moment. After hearing an unidentified song built around a single strummed banjo chord and a small group of voices, Wagner began exploring the tradition of "lined-out singing" – a centuries-old form of call-and-response gospel rooted in Scotland and later carried to Appalachia. Rather than recreating the style literally, Lambchop uses its emotional power as the foundation for an album that places the human voice at its centre, blending sparse arrangements with rich choral textures.

Tracked over just a few days, the album features Justin Vernon on banjo throughout, a six-part choir led by Blake Morgan, and songs co-written with band member Andrew Broder. The resulting sound is strikingly intimate yet quietly expansive, stripping away convention in favour of warmth, restraint and emotional resonance.
