When The Three Sounds returned to Blue Note in the late 1960s, the trio developed their characteristic grooving sound in a more ambitious and orchestral direction. After Coldwater Flat (1968), where they were accompanied by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, and Elegant Soul (1968), which marked the first collaboration with producer Monk Higgins, the development culminated with Soul Symphony from 1969. Here, pianist Gene Harris, bassist Henry Franklin, and drummer Carl Burnett play music composed, arranged, and conducted by Higgins, supplemented by woodwinds, brass, and strings. The title track, a magnificent soul-jazz suite with an orchestral groove, fills the entire first side, while the second side features four shorter compositions in the same style, including the irresistible "Repeat After Me," which draws inspiration from the call-and-response singing between a Baptist preacher and the congregation.
