Colbé consists of a complex array of minor characters and sub-plots. The enigmatic story travels back and forth in time, revealing the events by peeling through each character's motives. The beating heart of the story is in post-operative recovery. Her identity is ultimately revealed as Lea Assisi, a clinical safety specialist, whose principles are in conflict with the ambitions of a large corporation. In a process of dark mind games, the company sets up a smoke screen, spreading misinformation and removing evidence, in order to question what she has witnessed. The narrator compares Lea's experience with the analogy of a depleted house. The cold unfeeling nature of power and wealth mitigates any going back to innocence. Whilst clutching to a return of faith in human nature, everywhere she turns, there are questions that are both unanswered and unanswerable. She goes through the entire panoply of the system, pleading a case for her patients. Looking back to her father's values, she ruffles feathers, until the mystery comes together at the end, with a twist of fate. What carries her through? a home-coming. Each night, she visits the empty house, awaiting her father's arrival and anticipating their communion like a benediction. Recounting the sequence of events, Lea finds that she's grown into a mother, sacrificing her world for the safety of her children.
