The Oracle begins on the night of the full moon. Seven women gather at the home of mystery writer Edgar Ellen Poe for a witches' ceremony. There strange signs and omens. In the ritual, the Goddess Diana possesses Gem Silverley, the coven's high priestess. "Tonight", she prophesies, "you will witness my death". Gem reaches for Venus, a harmless pet snake. To the witches' astonishment, Venus bites her. Gem utters a final prophecy and dies. Most of the witches think of the death as supernatural. Only Edgar Ellen recognizes it as murder. When celebrated Homicide Inspector Louise Peterson arrives, she and Edgar Ellen join forces to find the killer. But the search leads to a revelation that will stun them both.
