NICK MURPHY, a San Diego 7th-grader of Chinese-Irish heritage, is a dreamer. His school life is changing from bad to worse as he becomes the favorite target of the bullies. His hobby of watching Kung Fu movies gives him an idea: maybe he can convince his grandfather to take him to a Kung Fu studio in China so that he can learn self defense and teach those bullies a lesson! Instead, his grandfather seems bent on forcing stuffy principles down his throat. Gradually, Nick discovers the real reason that he is being tested. Outnumbered, Nick fantasizes about recruiting some fairy-tale characters to help him conquer his biggest fear. Things start spiraling into an out-of-this-world adventure that he could only dream up.
