Julia Bonifant is a young woman coming of age in Sharpsburg, Maryland at the outset of the Civil War Battle of Antietam. She accompanies her older sister to the front, where they meet and work with Clara Barton. In the midst of the conflict, and despite her sister's disapproval, Julia cares for a wounded Confederate soldier. The story takes several twists and turns as the characters struggle with the battle's effect on their lives and resulting questions that arise about the meaning of a single death in the midst of carnage, caring in the midst of hostility, and how to rebuild one's place in a radically changing world.
