Limbo - Going Home
Jytte Rex
Danish visual artist and filmmaker Jytte Rex (b. 1942) has worked with painting, photography, artist books, happenings, film, and several other media since the 1960s. Many are familiar with her film portraits of, among others, the poet Inger Christensen and the architect Henning Larsen as well as her pioneering feminist work KVINDERNES BOG (The Women's Book) from 1972, which was influential in the breakthrough of the Danish women's liberation movement, as were some of Rex's early artworks and films.
In LIMBO – GOING HOME we encounter a wide range of new and older works by Jytte Rex in interaction with excerpts from literature that has played a significant role for the artist. The book can be read as a personal tribute to the authors whose books have become a kind of conversation partner for Rex in her work as an artist and can also be experienced as a key to her own highly topical and wide-ranging artistry.
The book touches on key themes in Rex's work such as memory, thresholds and transitions in life, love, human brutality and oppression, myths and the reality of women. It is a so-called artist's book – a work of visual art in book form – that sits between literature and visual art, and which Rex has given its own genre designation: a novel of images.
