Exposure to ionizing radiation through medical testing is generally safe, but there are risks that radiographers need to be aware of. The thyroid gland is a potential target organ for radiation-related damage, as it receives a considerable radiation dose from scattered radiation. There is a general consensus in the fact that there is a high prevalence of thyroid cancer and thyroid nodule formation in workers who were occupationally exposed to radiation as radiographers. This book sheds lights on the predictable effects of long term, low radiation dose exposure to the thyroid. The statistical findings should be especially useful to radiology staff as well as student radiographers undergoing training in radiology departments.
