This book documents the qualitative analysis of reading strategies of engineering students attempting a cloze test. The study was undertaken at the researcher's workplace (PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, India), as a part of her Masters in Philosophy degree requirements. The participants of the study are first year engineering students from different branches of engineering. The learners were interviewed following the study to identify the difficulties faced while comprehending a cloze test. The learner protocols have been analyzed to highlight the successful and unsuccessful strategies adopted by them to comprehend the text. The transcripts of some of the interviews are provided (unedited). The study provides certain interesting insights into the learners' reading processes and difficulties faced by them at the linguistic and conceptual levels. Certain remedial measures to enable learners tackle cloze tests and to improve their overall reading comprehension have also been suggested.
