It is April 1941 in Bern, and Lisbeth and Josef Dorfmeister surprise their Tante and Onkel Geiger by suddenly appearing on their doorstep with Pater Corelli. After a successful escape from the dangers of Austria, the trio are in need of help. "Broken Lives" is the sequel to "Dark Days," and tells the story of how the three expatriates listen, pray, and try to just survive the War as Europe and their country are ravished by armies. But all is not safe, even in Bern they are surrounded by spies. All three become involved in the expatriate Austrian resistance. Joined in exile in 1942 by their cousin, Albrecht Dorfmeister, they by 1944 and 1945, with their native city being bombed by the Americans, find the pull to return home too strong. Separately, the four expatriates sneak across the border to try and help free their countrymen as World War II in Europe comes to an end.
