Joanne is a young woman orphaned when she was twelve during a tragic river rafting accident that took the lives of her parents and younger sister. She grew up in foster and group homes, bouncing from one place to another. People described her as a mean and distant child. She would say they could go screw themselves. Now 18 years old and on her own, she has a job as a waitress at a coffee house in small Jemez Springs. Nothing interesting happens there until one day a unique man walks into her coffee shop. After that visit, she begins experiencing mind fogs and confusion until she recognizes that she has the same gift that her mother did. She can sense gargoyles. And, she might be falling in love with one of them.
