It began with a family in the Midwest where the Wabash River was the dividing line between the civilized west and the wilderness to the east. The Daniels family had come from Virginia and settled in the small village of Montezuma, Indiana several years earlier. One of the men had four sons and a daughter. One of those sons, Joe R. Daniels, had two sons and a daughter. The youngest of these sons was named Donald Scott Daniels. While his older brother and sister settled down to work the land, the fire for adventure burned hot in the youngest Daniels' blood. His home rested on the edge of a wild country many people wanted to explore for one reason or another. For a young lad who could get around and through hostile Indian country it was a potential gold mine of opportunities-and he had proven his ability to negotiate this world several times with short trips through the Indian country.
