River Rescue Nicholas Quarrier
River Rescue
Nicholas Quarrier
On June 23, 1976, the oil barge NEPCO ran aground on the St. Lawrence River. Approximately 300,000 gallons of crude oil no. 6 spilled into the river at the upriver end of Wellesley Island. For three days the oil spread downriver for 85 miles, and contaminated more than 300 miles of island and shoreline. The cleanup cost over 8 million dollars and lasted over 16 weeks. This is its story. Follow two young men as they dedicate their lives to cleaning their beloved river.
