Del Turner lives a quiet life with his father in a small college town, but he has a mysterious mother he sees only once a year in the early morning hours of his birthday, and every year she has brought him a magical gift. On the evening before his 15th birthday Del discovers that his father has vanished, and his mother appears to tell Del that he must go to the Kingdom of Night to rescue him. She gives Del a magical compass, and he sets out with his girlfriend Cori. The compass leads them through a strange forest to the dim and featureless plain that is the Kingdom of Night. There Del meets three half-brothers he didn't know he had, and learns that he is one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Children of Night whose non-human Night blood gives them near immortality and the power to use their minds to manipulate matter and create anything they wish. His brothers agree to help Del find his father - a quest they all attempted and failed with their own fathers - and they begin to teach him about his new powers and how to use them. But then Del and Cori inadvertently reignite an old conflict between two factions among the Children of Night, and Del makes a dangerous enemy of one of his half brothers. As the conflict escalates and spreads into Del's small hometown in Day, and his father and Cori are threatened, Del is forced to decide how he's going to use his new powers in a very personal struggle between good and evil.
