As a follow-up to The Gifted & the Worthless, these essays, written from the perspective of a long-term substitute teacher and adjunct professor, cover such subjects as school violence, Standardized Testing, illiteracy, teacher-student relations, for-profit colleges and problems surrounding private schooling. Many of the stories told might seem startling and disturbing, but that is precisely how many institutions choose to conduct business: by keeping things away from the public's attention and by conning their students into thinking they're "improving their lives" when they're really being handed diplomas and massive debt with no way to pay it off. Its function is not to be a deterrent from pursuing (or continuing) a career in education, but to alert individuals to some of the obstacles they will most likely face.
