Over 16 million served in the armed forces of the U. S. during the course of World War II. As we approach the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II we see the daily loss of hundreds of veterans of that conflict. As we lose them we lose their different stories of that war unlike any other. This book briefly covers the story of the experience of one of the 16 million who served. Lyle Holcomb grew up on a farm near the small northwestern Minnesota town of Detroit Lakes. Like so many others of that time he had not travelled far from home. Being called to serve in the U. S. Army changed that. A sign painter and artist in civilian life, for reasons known only to the army he was assigned to be a medic. He was sent to many training sites across the U. S. and in England. Ultimately his assigned duty was to deliver whole blood to frontline aid stations and field hospitals in the combat areas of France and Germany. The war was up close.
