Nora Graham, an accomplished musician, intends to devote her life to her art. When she meets a sixth-grade classmate, the result of a summons for jury duty, Nora believes her interest is only in how Willie Wade, a needy freckled faced boy, became Bill Wade, a handsome attorney. She begins to question her career decision while on a European concert tour when the symphony conductor expects more from her than playing the piano. Attorney Bill Wade grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Raised by a grandmother, he compensated for his unfortunate childhood by being smart, a characteristic his classmates disliked. When he meets Nora Graham, he shares with her that he became an attorney because their sixth-grade teacher helped send him to law school. He also married her granddaughter, now deceased. Despite his achievements and attraction to Nora, he is unable to forget that she once knew him as Silly Willy Wade.
