It's 1906 and Ernie Lundy is on the run. He is rescued, nursed back to health, and continues his manipulative and violent treatment of the people around him. He is driven by revenge and the recovery of his lost fortune. He adopts an alias, (Bernie Landry), and is recruited by the West End Gang who controls smuggling at the Port of Montreal. Sheriff McKenzie discovers Lundy's means of escape and asks the Montreal Police for help. Kathleen Matthews continues her studies at McGill and renews her association with Dr. Pierre Ducharme. She assists Ducharme in a controversial research program involving treatment of Boer War shell-shock victims. Homicide Inspector Danny Bouvette is drawn ever more deeply into Kathleen's world when several violent crimes point to Ernie Lundy. In a bizarre twist of fate, Ernie Lundy becomes a changed man in a strange place.
