In the woods of north central Minnesota, at a remote camp for juvenile offenders, a young man named Erik witnesses the sudden end of civilization. It comes in the form of a strange cosmic storm that kills over ninety-percent of all life on Earth in a single night, reducing humans and animals alike to dried-out, mummified corpses. Of the few like Erik who escaped instant death from the storm, the struggle for survival has already begun. In the days following the storm, Erik undertakes an almost impossible journey through the ruins of civilization to do more than just survive. He made a promise to his younger sister that he would return home to her. It is that promise and the hope that his sister may also have survived that keeps him moving forward against all odds. But in a decimated world with no rules or laws, death can come quickly at the hands of another or slowly as the aftereffects of the storm linger on. To fulfill his promise, Erik must navigate a dangerous new world of desperate survivors, armed cults, and even the lure of sanctuary. It is a world in which he learns that his own survival depends on being ready to kill at a moment's notice and that friends must sometimes be left behind.
