The first bike is usually a tot's bike, then along the road during the teen age years, maybe a "Paperboy Special" to earn a little money. When throwing papers went away, many graduated to a racing type road bicycle or a mountain bike, usually for exercise or competition. In this story, the bike begins it, but the results are unexpected, rapid and life changing. There's robbery, assault, and maybe love.
