Do you ever sit in church letting the sermon go in one ear and out the other? Fifty years ago I heard some of these sermons. Yet, only in recent years, with the text in front of me, was I able to absorb the meaning of GETTING OURSELVES TOGETHER IN ONE PIECE and actually finish editing this book of sermons! The sermon STEWING INSTEAD OF DOING whose title brought us so many laughs has vanished without a trace. We are very fortunate, however, to have the manuscripts from which A Year with Chaplain Cheatham was taken. Reading and rereading these sermons with their references to army life, psychological insights, and a reasonable approach to religion, brings us to a better understanding of the abundant life we are meant to live.
