The essence of this book deals with healing and breaking our patterns in relationships. I will look at the nature of patterns, where they come from, and what purpose they serve in our lives. I believe we end up attracting the encounters that we do because of the emotional climate inside of us, so relationships really are a mirror for where we have been and what traumas are keeping us stuck in the past. I will look at how patterns operate within the psyche as well as bringing in neurological research that reveals how the brain functions in maintaining our relationship patterns. Through exploring how patterns get developed/created we can then begin to understand how to heal relationship patterns. We look within ourselves, examining our responses and where they come from, in order to create new, conscious and flexible ways of relating to others in our lives. I will describe how patterns manifest themselves using concrete examples, as well as exploring how patterns seem to take on a universal form amongst men and women. These patterns I have termed: Hero, heroine, player, butterfly, and male/female vampire. In the latter part of the book, I will invite the reader to participate in exercises designed to provoke self-awareness that can guide he or she toward creating new ways of relating to others. I believe that through this personal reflection and opportunities for self-growth the reader can begin to choose the partners that will compliment who he or she is instead of lessening who he or she can be. This book can serve as a manual that will bring clarity to the nature of one's patterns as well as arming the reader with the information and the tools to break one's relationship patterns once and for all.
