Virginia (Ginger) Forrester, a young woman working toward an advanced degree in Southwestern paleoanthropology, makes an unexpected and exciting fossil hominid discovery which is termed "impossible" by her professor because he, and especially his assistant fear it will endanger a proposed power company dam project. The woman's father, Bill, who owns the property where the discovery was made and hopes to benefit by the sale of land to be flooded by the dam, suddenly seems to face a choice between dam and daughter. He takes time out to find romance, and later faces danger. The story revolves around a well-functioning, loving and rather traditional Southwestern family, probably dominated by the eldest female member, Grandma Maria, who is involved directly, indirectly or by inference in nearly everything the family does. Faced with choices, Bill, often advised and sometimes aided by old Ruben, Maria's husband, leads the effort to solve the problems triggered by Ginger's discovery.
