Ryan Cunningham's excitement about an air experience flight with the Aero Club, evaporates when he learns he is neither the son of Ranfield and Colin Cunningham, whom he knows as his parents, nor sister of Hope, his lifelong companion. Ryan is a distant cousin who Ranfield and Corin cannot adopt because his birth mother insists she recover from post-partum depression. Ryan struggles to adjust and takes a summer job and June, Hope's childhood friend, works with Ryan running a concession. They grow fond of each other and discover their need for each other after June's near-death experience when sailing and caught in a thunderstorm. With his pilot's license still fresh, Ryan and June rescue an ill child by air in appalling weather, receiving accolades for their bravery and disparaging comments for the risks they take. Ryan follows his grandfather and father into the Royal Air Force while June attends the Sorbonne in Paris.
