When we were young, every cloud was a magic carpet to ten thousand stars or a castle made of cotton that only we held the keys to. Every apple box and orange crate was a palace, a locomotive, or a mighty ship that sailed across the globe. And elephants could fly. As our youth got swept away by schoolmarms, driving tests, proms and paychecks, our memories, our innocence, our imagines too, forgot of the undiscovered colors in everyday rainbows that we had yet to invent. Rules and logic and conform, drew the lines in the notebooks and borders around the sandcastles that we no longer knew how to form. Days led to years, minutes led to lifetimes, sighs of the yesterdays that never saw tomorrow, yet deep in our hearts, deeper in our dreams, we soon come to realize that the more rapidly each day passes, we remember that it is better to color outside those lines, and every grain of sand that falls in the hourglass is a sand castle all in its own. And too, elephants really can fly.
