The Killer Monument stands on Stage Island at the mouth of the Saco River in Maine. Explorers saw an Indian woman crossing the river in a canoe with her baby. The explorers wanted to see if the child of a "savage" could swim like a kitten or a puppy. They threw the baby into the river. The baby drowned. In her grief, the mother cursed the river -- "Three white men will drown every year in the Saco River, forevermore." The curse has held true to this day. The river of life was changed to a river of death. At her death she was punished for her crime. This book was a bestseller on Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance list. It has sold regularly ever since.
