D. from Peabody College, now part of Vanderbilt University. He had careers as an actor, stage director, and college professor. He authored numerous commentaries on Shakespearean productions and sources, wrote "A Private's Memoir of WWII," edited five books on Shakespeare, and co-authored four books on a range of subjects.
