In the Arizona Territory, a decade after the Civil War, in the town of Dobson, a graveyard is in turmoil as a body grows, pushing up the earth and knocking down buildings. The body is from the fresh grave of Leroy Roosevelt, a young black man hanged out of fear and hatred. With Dobson destroyed and Leroy?s body swallowing up the desert, two other men must face the truth. ?Our destinies are intertwined, the three of us,? Otis tells Cleve. ?We make up a trinity, but Leroy alone will judge the future.? Cleve Biddle raised Leroy like a son and thinks a future of lynchings and black laws is no future to move towards. Otis, a clairvoyant, believes mankind will come to their better natures. These two men with memories of enslavement must face the impossible in the desert and a future uncertain.
