Marsh Kaminsky
Meet Onie Lawrence (rhymes with pony). She's middle-aged, wealthy, a champion bridge player, and she suffers the pains and indignities of Multiple Sclerosis. She meets Marc Lurie, a moody, bitter, and very cynical Jewish ex-CPA who barely scratches out a living as a gardener and freelance writer. Both are very unhappy with the cards life dealt them. On the face they have nothing in common. But at one point she says, "Marc, why can't you see the obvious . . . that God put us together to reform life insurance?" Marc is dubious until events prove her to be right. Not everyone agrees with what ONIE is about. At first glance, the story revolves around what is perhaps the most boring of all subjects: life insurance. However, others have described the book as a tender romance . . . an action thriller . . . a crazy comedy . . .a female empowerment book . . . a consumer handbook . . . a blueprint for educational reform . . . a how-to lovemaking manual . . . a book on living with a disability. If you ask the author what it's all about, all you'll get back is a blank stare, because he's not altogether sure himself. Go read it and make up your own mind.
